Michael Douglas Winkler

Our friend and coworker, Mike Winkler, has passed away due to complications related to his battle with COVID-19.

Mike was a man of many passions and hobbies. From sailing boats to flying planes. From hunting with his dog to river fishing. From driving motorcycles to scuba diving. Be it land, air or sea, Mike was always the captain. He was an expert marksman and avid gun collector. And he still made time to enjoy breakfast most weekends with his good friend, Monty.

In addition to his wide range of talents, Mike will be remembered as an extremely generous person. His love for animals ran deep and he regularly donated considerable funds to the ASPCA. He was gruff around the edges but extremely kind inside. Known as “the godfather of North Base, Mike spent the past 30 years as a loyal friend to his fellow colleagues. He was often the first to arrive at 3:45am with coffee and good-natured teasing.

Mike was a man of many dreams and different chapters. He was looking forward to retiring, planning to split his time between Alaska and Montana, where he and his loved ones could enjoy the outdoors.

Mike is survived by his partner Karla, his dog Ruger and his son, Lance.
