Dorothy's Obituary

On Tuesday, June 9, 2020, God called home his angel Dorothy Elizabeth Hester (age 87) affectionately known as Nanny to come home and find eternal rest in His arms. Nanny was born a fraternal twin, on October 16, 1932 to James B. Roseboro and Cleo Duncan Roseboro. Nanny was one of 11 children born and educated in Blacksburg, S.C.; Nanny’s siblings include; Frank (Mac) (deceased), Margaret (deceased), Paul (deceased), Frances (deceased), Doris (twin), James (Toot) (deceased), Louie (deceased), Yvonne, Angela, Larry (deceased).

Nanny moved to Washington, DC in the early 1950’s, looking for greater opportunity and adventure. There she met and married the love of her life Sam Jones Hester. From this union, they had 3 beautiful children Keith (deceased), Shelia, and Kirk. They purchased their home in 1955 and lived a loving happy life together until his death. Nanny continued to raise their children in the family home. Nanny’s children were the center of her life, and she provided them with the best of everything.  Nanny worked as a CNA in Alexandria, Virginia, where she lived for many years. She retired after nearly 30 years of serving others, and moved back to her family home in Washington, D.C. She was a provider and care giver by nature and she never hesitated to help her family. She was private and very low-key, and she never talked much about the ways she helped others. Nanny’s word was “When doing something from the heart, there is no need in talking about it.” She was as straight forward as she was gentle and as forthright as she was considerate.  Nanny was a smart, fun, loving, and kind woman that loved to shop for her grandchildren. Nanny had class and style. She loved to watch movies, laughing at stupid jokes, and listening to music. She was a music lover; she had every album in every genre you could imagine, and she always had the best parties. She loved Al Green, Frank Sinatra, and Mahalia Jackson to name a few. If you spent any time with Nanny as a child, you knew how to swim, dance and skate. She was all about that life of fun.

Nanny leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy of love and service, her children, Sheila and Kirk Hester; eight grandchildren Tahlita Lynn aka Lee-Lee, Dione M. aka Buffie, Pier Angelie, Dawnisha aka Dawn, Shawnisha aka Shawn, Natasha (deceased), Katisha aka Tisha, Kirk aka Kokie; 10 great-grandchildren (Leonte Anthony, Jamia Alesha aka Mia, Lily, Dione Baqi aka D, Cayla, Tyler, Naeem W. A., Layton Cassidy, Khalil and Kayla; two great-great grandchildren, Zahr and Kaia. She also leaves to cherish her memory three sisters, Doris, Yvonne and Angela and numerous well-beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

We will love and miss her always.
