Remembering Bobby Glen Richards

Born in Elkmont, Alabama, Bobby passed naturally at home in San Diego, CA. He was 84 years old. He is survived by Tsuruko Kodama, his wife of over 58 years, their daughter, Judy Reiko Richards Cappello, and her husband John J. Cappello, jr.

Bobby loved his 21-year career in the Navy, which took him from  Decatur, AL to San Diego, CA for Basic Training in 1954. He got to know people from, and experience places like Thailand, Australia, the  Philippines, and Japan. After Basic Training he was stationed in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor for thirteen years where he built life-long friends and created some of his most valuable memories. Having done two tours in  Vietnam, sat atop nuclear-armed torpedoes in Bay of Pigs, and surveillance missions during the Cold War he was a proud Submarine Veteran, retired as a Chief Diesel Inspector in San Diego where he called home for 51 years.

Bobby had a great life devoted to his family, his country, and his mentor, Daisaku Ikeda, with whom he Vowed to spread the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism for the cause of world peace. He loved engaging in dialogue with any person he came across, always leaving a room full of strangers with a handful of friends.

He continued to hold his mother, Nina Mae, close to his heart singing her praise with adoration. He was her youngest and last surviving of five children - Wilma Dean, Eugene, Mattie Lou, and Doyce. Bobby's compassionate and easy-going nature affected every person he met throughout his lifetime. He was loved, admired, and respected by many and is greatly missed.

He was interred with Military Funeral Honors at Miramar National Cemetery.
